Fall Fashion Trends 2012

Before moving on to London FashionWeek, here are a few trends one should note for the concluded Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week:

Capes
Tie Belts
Blanket Outerwear

Both Paris and Milan showed a captivating amount of trendy women’s ready-to-wear, with the most notable piece being military style (old world) capes. After hitting the runway in Europe, we saw the likes of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, and Victoria Beckham recreate the movement with an American twist.

Vera Wang displayed feminine cape outerwear, whilst L’Wren Scott delivered an elegant, somewhat Gothic alternative. Rag & Bone along with the noted Michael Kors brought light to the deconstructed wonder of the blanket coat, evoking feels of warmth, fireplaces and hot cocoa.

The tie was put to good use this season by designers: Ralph Lauren who used the tie in it’s signature state and Proenza Schouler with their innovative twist to use the classic symbol of masculine attire as a belt. This is possibly the simplest (if not most cost effective) trend to reproduce with ease this season. Michae Kors, Krakoff, Lacoste, Calvin Klein, and Charlotte Ronson put plaid in the hot seat by offering up panelled blocks in leather and alternating colors layered with sheer (as seen in Peter som and the lovely Vera Wang). These large exaggerated patterns give one the perfect excuse for some expert color blocking.

Speaking of colors, when shopping for your fall 2012 wardrobe, consider vibrant reds (lining towards the purple side of the spectrum), safety orange, and light shades of gold (think 10-14 karat). For the ideal paring, incorporate black or throw in a black and white paisley. For examples see the fall collections of Narciso Rodriguez and Diane von Furstenberg monochrome or 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Fashion trend - Colour Block It!

We loves, loves, loves this trend! Colour blocking is great way to liven up any outfit and mix and match old and new pieces to get a look that is uniquely you. Even if you rock up to a party and another girl is wearing the same shirt as you, if you mix it up – hardly anyone will notice. So go on and try it.

There are different ways to rock this look. You can choose to go full on and have each item you’re wearing a different colour. If you wanna do that, make sure that the colours complement each other. Or you can try and at least wear two items of the same colour. Just like the girl in the green jacket and shoes. Perfect! Otherwise another option is to rock two colours. Like the orange and red outfit. It’s a safer, yet still stylish way to wear this trend.

Another way to colour block is through accessories. Bags, shoes, cellphones, hats etc. Depending the colours you choose they can add that extra vibe to your look. If you’re going to do a plain blue or green outfit, make your accessory extra bright. Play with luminous colours! Come on be brave. Look how well it worked out for these ladies in the pics!

Don't think we're doodling in those notebooks we keep out during runway shows—they're filled to the binding with trend notes and observations. And don't think we're flipping through all the fall fashion show images online for sheer pleasure—we're cataloging them, grouping them, and filing them. As for our sleeping schedules? Will You Wear Chanel's Latest Nail Shade in Mimosa?

Pictures are out, and so I must talk about the latest 'it' lacquer from Chanelcalled Le Vernis Nail Colour in Mimosa that is set to launch this April as part of the Spring 2011 collection.

It's bright, sexy, daring and something we've seen on A-list stars like Rihanna,Katy Perry and even Natalie Portman in the past couple of Spring/Summers in shiny opaques. However, this yellow shade is more like the bubbly it's named after (in the UK, we also call this orange juice, champy mix a buck's fizz) as it contains flecks of green and gold shimmer too. I'm excited for a Sunday brunch mimosa cocktail wearing Chanel Mimosa — how about you?

COLOR CRAZY: ROYAL BLUE AND BLACK

Ok! It’s not rocket science. Royal Blue and Black is – was – and will be a great color combination. If you consider black to be a “safe” color and you want to experiment a little with something out of your usual comfort zone, royal blue is a great start because it is no too far away from black in terms of effect. Here’s a little inspiration on how to bring all your black accessories into 2009: by adding a little royal blue!

At Aquascutum and Michael Kors, a black belt adds definition to the knee-high dresses. Complete the look with a black clutch.

Mini dresses and platform gladiator inspired shoes = legs for days at BCBG and Gucci.

Maintain the aura of royalty with a long dress a la Lela Rose or Issa.

Sheer materials are a hit this season and the royal blue world is no exception. At Costume National the sheer black material is a perfect canvas for royal blue sequins, while Vera Wang creates a delicate sheer overlay for a royal blue dress.

Two piece combos can be as sophisticated or as simple as you prefer. Sonia Rykiel achieves a very luxurious look with this silk blue and black suit. The fishnet socks and ankle tie pants is definitely a look worth replicating. Paul Smith on the other hand, plays with the shape of the pant and the uses a scarf as a belt to add dimension and exaggerate the waist in it’s smallest point.

DKNY takes a simple casual approach but comes up with a look that prioritizes comfort and can be dressed up with jewelry.
